In the months since WWE CEO Vince McMahon announced a reboot of the XFL — an American football league that originally launched in 2001 and played one season before it ceased operations — fans have been awaiting news about which cities would be awarded one of the the league’s eight teams.
VOTE: Would you want an XFL team in Seattle?
According to WWE reporter Brad Shepard, one of those cities will be Seattle.
The XFL won’t officially announce which cities will be awarded franchises until Wednesday, Dec. 5.
At least one other city has already been linked to a franchise, according to The Athletics’ Pablo Maurer: Washington D.C.
The new XFL is scheduled to launch in 2020. Former NFL quarterback Oliver Luck, who was named XFL commissioner in June, told the Associated Press the XFL presents an opportunity to “reimagine football.”
“An incredibly fascinating time in terms of technology that exists to engage fans,” Luck said. “All of those combined led me to believe the key ingredients to a successful launch are there to deliver great football, which I think was one of the failings of the original league.”
The team would further expand Seattle as a major sports market. Already home to NWSL, WNBA, MLB, NFL and MLS teams, the city is also looking to add a professional hockey team in 2020.
