Wyman’s Football 101: Dickson’s fake punt in Seahawks’ win over Lions

Looking back at the Seahawks’ win over the Lions last Sunday, one play sticks out above them all: punter Michael Dickson’s run out of the end zone for a first down that allowed Seattle to wrap up the 28-14 victory.
Clayton: No trades, but still plenty of midseason Seahawks roster intrigue
Dickson wasn’t supposed to try to run for a first down. In fact, the idea was for him to run around in the end zone to keep the clock running, then step out of bounds to take a safety. Sure, that would have given Detroit two points, but at 28-16 it still would have been a two-score game and Seattle would have been able to free kick it back to Detroit. Dickson saw an opening after he was snapped the ball in the end zone, though, so he went for it.
Those instincts and willingness to take a hit at the end of the play led former NFL linebacker and current Seahawks radio color commentator Dave Wyman to declare Dickson “a football player,” no small feat for a punter. And in this week’s Football 101 video, Wyman uses Dickson’s run to break down the thinking behind taking a safety with the lead late in a game and how the play opened up for Dickson to run.
