Clayton: No trades, but still plenty of midseason Seahawks roster intrigue

The Seahawks didn’t make any trades as the NFL reached the trade deadline.

Huard’s Chalk Talk: Lockett’s TD catch in win over Lions

No surprise. They only have four draft choices for next season, missing a second-rounder, a sixth and a seventh. While it could have been tempting to acquire Bruce Irvin from the Oakland Raiders, the price might have been a little too high and the Seahawks would have had a tough time fitting half of his $8 million salary under the cap.

Still, it was interesting roster day for the Seahawks. Let’s review what happened Tuesday.

• The Seahawks released wide receiver Brandon Marshall. I sensed that was getting close, as what I saw in Detroit told me he was the next move coming for the Seahawks. Marshall had only two plays in the win over the Lions. After positioning himself to be the No. 3 receiver at the beginning of the season, he dropped down to be No. 5.

When I went into the locker room after the 28-14 win over Detroit, Marshall was one of the first players out. His locker stall was empty. He must have had an idea the end was coming.

Four drops in two games a few weeks ago sealed Marshall’s fate. David Moore started getting more playing time and locked up the No. 3 receiving job. Jaron Brown became No. 4 and is still looking for more playing time. Marshall was No. 5 and wasn’t going to play special teams because of his age, making it even harder to keep him on the roster.

This could be it for Marshall. He signed with the Seahawks in the offseason but admitted he didn’t have much of a market coming off two surgeries. In training camp, he did well enough to earn a spot on the team and earned a chance at playing time. Four drops ended that run.

• You wonder if the Seahawks will fill Marshall’s roster spot with Keenan Reynolds, but don’t be surprised if it is Caleb Scott. Both are practice squad players who show some value.

• Back to Marshall, I thought his release would have been more likely to come next week than on Tuesday. Running back J.D. McKissic is eligible to come off Injured Reserve next week and that seems very likely. McKissic offers speed from the backfield and pass-catching ability.

• Apparently trade interest in running back C.J. Prosise wasn’t there, so he’s still on the roster. Maybe the Seahawks were reluctant to trade him and leave their backfield with only three backs for Sunday’s game against the Los Angeles Chargers. Of course, the Seahawks might not have been offered anything but a seventh-round pick. Prosise is a talent, but right he’s now the fourth back and doesn’t get much playing time.

• The verdict came in on linebacker Mychal Kendricks. His suspension was for a Player Conduct Violation and he’s going to be out a total of eight weeks. He does get credit for time served so he will be available in Week 14 for a Monday night game against the Minnesota Vikings.

Player Conduct suspensions are normally six weeks. Kendricks challenged his indefinite suspension and wanted a definition on how many weeks he would be out. Eight is a little different, two games more than the norm.

What is interesting is the league will allow him to start practicing after serving six weeks, meaning he can practice with the team for two weeks before his return, which would be Week 12. Though the Seahawks would have liked the six-game suspension better, they can have him as the main backup linebacker for four games and possibly the playoffs.

Kendricks played well filling in for an injured K.J. Wright, and he’s one of the best bargains in the NFL. The Seahawks could have him for seven games for $325,297.

Not even Michael Dickson knew he was going to run on fake punt
