After 3 1/2 years, Edgar Martinez is stepping away from his everyday job as Mariners hitting coach and will take on the role of organizational hitting coach with the team.

The move was announced by Mariners general manager Jerry Dipoto in a press release Tuesday morning.

“Edgar came to (manager Scott Servais) and me after the season ended and talked to us about his desire to find a position of value within the organization that would provide more flexibility than the role of Major League hitting coach,” Dipoto said in the release. “We have spent the past three weeks working with Edgar to design a new position that will allow us to take advantage of his knowledge, passion and teaching skill at both the major and minor league levels, while allowing Edgar flexibility that is unavailable in his current role.”

Edgar took over as the Mariners’ hitting coach June 20, 2015, having previously served as a guest instructor and special assistant since 2004. In his new role he will work with hitters at all levels throughout the Mariners organization. The plan is for Edgar to both take on traditional roaming duties and be available for special projects, including one-on-one coaching.

With Tuesday’s move, the Mariners now have two coaching vacancies to fill, the other being pitching coach.
