Mariners All-Star Robinson Canó will make his return to organized play Monday night in a rehab assignment with Seattle’s Triple-A affiliate, the Tacoma Rainiers. He is expected to be in the lineup for the Rainiers in their 7:05 p.m. game at Cheney Stadium against the Colorado Springs Sky Sox.

Moore: Maybe Canó will be cure for what ails Mariners

Canó was suspended 80 games for violating the MLB’s Joint Drug Prevention and Treatment Program on May 14. Shortly before the suspension, he had been placed on the Mariners’ 10-day disabled list due to a broken fifth metacarpal suffered when he was hit by a pitch in Detroit.

The 35-year-old Canó is hitting .287 with four home runs, 10 doubles, 23 RBIs, 24 runs scored and an .825 OPS in 39 games with the Mariners this season.

The rehab assignment may offer the chance to see Canó playing more than his customary second base. With Dee Gordon having moved to second in Canó’s absence for the Mariners and Canó not eligible to play in the postseason this year due to his suspension, he is expected to see time at first base and third base in addition to second when he returns to the Mariners.

Canó will be eligible to return to the Mariners on Aug. 14, which will be the second game of a three-game set in Oakland. The A’s are the team Seattle is currently chasing for the American League’s second wild card spot.
