RENTON – Germain Ifedi didn’t necessarily take a step backward.

He did move back to the position he played as a rookie, though. The former first-round pick played right guard for a portion of Monday’s practice.

Hawks camp takeaways: Shaquem Griffin picks off Wilson, roster moves

“Good eyes,” said Mike Solari, Seattle’s offensive line coach, when asked about the switch.

Ifedi played guard as a rookie in 2016 but moved to right tackle last season. He was the most penalized player on the team. He’s also a first-round pick, and there has been the hope that a change in offensive line coaches from Tom Cable to Solari will help Ifedi’s development.

That’s why Ifedi’s work at right guard was noteworthy, though Solari characterized it as more look-and-see than anything permanent.

“The best five start,” Solari said. “Best five starts. So, we wanted to work them in a little bit in a sense of playing some different positions.”

D.J. Fluker was signed in the offseason, but is noticeably limping through this first week of training camp. When Ifedi moved to right guard, Isaiah Battle filled in at right tackle.

Just part of the training camp evaluation, said Solari.

“It’ll change every day,” Solari said of the line configuration. “That’s the key thing about what – competition. Every day. Compete. Every man is competing to make the roster, every man is competing to start, every man is competing for a role on this team to help win a championship.”
