James Paxton’s anticipated return from the disabled list will have to wait another turn through the Mariners’ rotation.

O’Neil: The Mariners have been lucky… and good

The Mariners decided to scratch Paxton from his scheduled start Tuesday night against the San Francisco Giants, opting to keep him on the 10-day DL while he continues to recover from back stiffness.

With Paxton out, left-handed long reliever Roenis Elias will make a spot start in the 7:10 p.m. game on 710 ESPN Seattle.

Paxton left his last start against the Los Angeles Angels on July 12 in the first inning due to tightness in his lower back and was placed on the DL the next day. There wasn’t much alarm at the time as the DL move allowed Seattle to open up a roster spot heading into the All-Star break and Paxton would be eligible to return without technically having missed a start after the break.

Paxton’s next turn in the rotation is set for Monday, July 30 at home against the Houston Astros.

Here is the Mariners’ lineup for Tuesday’s game against the Giants.

Mariners (60-40)

Dee Gordon, 2B
Jean Segura, SS
Mitch Haniger, RF
Nelson Cruz, DH
Kyle Seager, 3B
Ryon Healy, 1B
Denard Span, LF
Mike Zunino, C
Guillermo Heredia, CF

Roenis Elias, LHP
