The Mariners have added a pair of fresh right-handed arms to their bullpen ahead of their four-game series against the Boston Red Sox.
Just how clutch are Mariners’ top hitters Segura and Haniger?
Nick Rumbelow and Rob Whalen have been recalled from Triple-A Tacoma, with first baseman Daniel Vogelbach optioned back to the Rainiers and right-hander Mike Morin designated for assignment.
Rumbelow, 26, started the year on the disabled list due to a brachial plexus injury, but he has made three scoreless one-inning outings for Tacoma since being reinstated June 5. He has retired nine of 11 batters faced, striking out five. He was acquired last November from the Yankees for a pair of minor league pitchers.
Whalen, 24, is 7-3 with a 4.50 ERA over 12 starts this year for the Rainiers. He made a pair of appearances for the Mariners in 2017, including one start, giving up five runs over 7 1/3 innings.
The hope was for Rumbelow to make the team out of spring training. Injury in spring training sidelined him, but he is an arm that was expected to contribute this year. Whalen had a terrific spring and can give them innings.

The 27-year-old Morin made two appearances in relief for the Mariners after being selected from Tacoma on June 8. He gave up one run over two innings, striking out three and walking one. The Mariners claimed Morin off waivers from Kansas City last December.
Vogelbach, 25, appeared in just one game for Seattle in his third stint up with the big league club this year after being recalled June 8. He is hitting .210 with two home runs in 23 games with the Mariners and .304 with 10 home runs over 32 games with Tacoma.
In Thursday’s opener of the four-game series against Boston, Kyle Seager is back at third base and hitting fifth a day after missing Seattle’s finale against the Angels due to a personal issue.
