With Dee Gordon on the 10-day disabled list, the Mariners will turn to Jean Segura in the leadoff spot.
Moore: How long can Mariners keep rolling without Canó?
Segura, the Mariners shortstop who has been red hot at the plate over the last two weeks, will hit first in their series opener in Oakland at 7:05 p.m. on 710 ESPN Seattle. Gordon Beckham will take over at second base for Gordon.
The Mariners used Segura as their primary leadoff hitter in 2017, but have been using him at second in the order behind Gordon this year.
Gordon isn’t the only notable player out of the lineup for Seattle. All-Star designated hitter Nelson Cruz will miss his second straight game following a hit by pitch directly off his left elbow on Saturday. Daniel Vogelbach, who was called up from Triple-A Tacoma on Tuesday to take Gordon’s roster spot, will be the DH.
Mariners manager Scott Servais said the Mariners simply wanted to give Cruz one more day off to let his elbow rest.
Mariners holding Cruz out to get another day of healing for that elbow. He wanted to play today.
