A day after Christian Bergman threw seven scoreless innings for the Mariners in a spot start against Texas, he has been optioned to Triple-A Tacoma as the M’s have added some bullpen help.

The Mariners selected right-hander Ryan Cook on Thursday from the Rainiers to join the bullpen, and Bergman is back with Tacoma after a one-day stint with the major league club.
Bergman started Wednesday’s 5-1 loss to the Rangers, called up prior to the game as the Mariners needed a sixth starter due to having to use two of their rotation members in a doubleheader last Saturday. It’s likely the 30-year-old Bergman will be back with the M’s sooner rather than later considering his performance both against Texas and in Triple-A this year (3.40 ERA, 41 strikeouts, 12 walks in eight starts), but it will have to wait 10 days unless the Mariners put a player on the disabled list due to MLB rules.
Cook, 30, has a 2.03 ERA with two saves, 17 strikeouts and three walks over 13 1/3 innings. His first appearance in this stint with Seattle will be his first in the majors since Sept. 16, 2015. He missed the entire 2017 season following Tommy John surgery in October 2016. Cook was an All-Star in 2012 for the Oakland A’s.
