Dee Gordon’s first workout at second base as a member of the Seattle Mariners went well on Tuesday. Still, don’t expect to see him moving from center field to the infield until the weekend.
Notebook: Nelson Cruz to miss some time with foot injury
“Dee told me afterward he’s good to go,” manager Scott Servais said before Wednesday’s series finale against Texas. “He needs a couple days. … I want to be smart, he’s also playing center field every day. Don’t want to wear him out.”
The next step for Gordon, who has played center field exclusively for the Mariners since they acquired him over the offseason but is also the owner of a Gold Glove at second base, is to take some live grounders.
“I want him to get some live (ground balls) off the bat tomorrow. … Just get some balls live off the bat in BP – the speed of the ball will help there,” Servais said. “Probably this weekend at some point we’ll slide him in at second base.”
Once Gordon makes the switch, it will create an opportunity in center for Guillermo Heredia, who will see regular playing time.
“Guillermo will play the majority of the time in center. Guillermo’s a very accomplished outfielder, defensively he’s outstanding out there,” Servais said.
Servais, Gordon and general manager Jerry Dipoto spoke more about Gordon’s impending move back to second on Tuesday, which you can read about here.
