Just about every no-hitter has an incredible defensive play or two that plays a role in the pitcher maintaining a shiny zero under the hit column.

James Paxton’s no-hitter for the Mariners on Tuesday night was no different.
The Mariners had a few nice plays in the field against the Blue Jays, including a diving catch by Dee Gordon in the first inning and a leaping one by Ben Gamel in the eighth. But none were bigger than what Kyle Seager did to end the seventh inning.

A one-time Gold Glove winner at the hot corner, Seager showed why with an amazing diving stop on a shot near the line, followed up by an equally great throw to first baseman Ryon Healy in time to get speedy Toronto center fielder Kevin Pillar out.
An interesting note: Of the Mariners’ six no-hitters, Seager has played in four of them. The others were a combined no-hitter by six Mariners pitchers in 2012, Felix Hernandez’s perfect game later that same year, and Hisashi Iwakuma’s no-no in 2015.
