Jacob Martin has never been surrounded by this much water.

The Seahawks’ sixth-round draft pick out of Temple University grew up in Aurora, Colo. and played college ball in Philadelphia. He fell in love with the east coast after visiting his brother at Columbia. But the Pacific Northwest is a new experience.

The past weekend found Martin at a three-day rookie minicamp, practicing with dozens of other players along the shores of Lake Washington at Seahawks’ headquarters in Renton, Wash.

Martin opened up about his time at camp (as well as his draft experience) during an interview with 710 ESPN Seattle’s Bob, Groz and Tom.

“Oh man, draft day was crazy,” Martin said, returning to the day he got the call from Seahawks general manager John Schneider. “It was probably one of the most stressful and anxiety-filled times that you go through. You’re just sitting there waiting for the phone call, hoping you get the call.”

Ultimately, Martin is happy to be with the Seahawks.

“I ended up in a spot I really wanted to be. I’ve always wanted to live in Seattle. It’s a great organization; it’s a great program.”

Martin was a rusher at Temple – where he recorded 8.0 sacks for the Owls last year – but at camp, head coach Pete Carroll had him working primarily at Leo. There, Carroll praised his motor and physicality, adding that while playing at outside linebacker could also be in Martin’s future his immediate impact will likely be on special teams.

Martin’s college coach, Geoff Collins, also encouraged a defensive-minded program, having previously held the defensive coordinator position for Florida and Mississippi State.

“We modeled a lot of things we did after how Pete Carroll did his thing at USC,” Martin said. “Following the process, understanding the numbers of football, you know: if you don’t have this many turnovers, if you hold the team under 17 points, we’ll [succeed]. Or we know that we play about the ball and having leverage of the ball … so those types of numbers are what I really like about playing here in Seattle for coach Carroll. In our interaction, you can tell how they do things here. He brings a lot of energy and a lot of juice to everything they do, and I love that.”
