Elias was sent from Seattle to Boston before the 2016 season along with reliever Carson Smith for Wade Miley and Jonathan Aro.
The 29-year-old Elias made 49 starts combined in 2014 and 2015 for the Mariners, maintaining a 10-12 record and 3.85 ERA in 2014 and 5-8 record and 4.14 ERA in 2015. He never found his footing in the big leagues with the Red Sox, however, appearing in just four games total over 2016 and 2017.
Elias is 1-0 with one save, a 1.23 ERA, nine strikeouts and two walks in four games (over 7 1/3 innings) with Triple-A Pawtucket this season. He will report to Triple-A Tacoma for the Mariners.
Elias had a harrowing experience coming to America from his native Cuba, which Shannon Drayer covered in this story.
