Daniel Vogelbach will make his 2018 debut in the field Wednesday, getting his first start of the year at first base in the Mariners’ 4:15 p.m. game against the San Francisco Giants.
Stelton: Did we sell the Mariners short entering the season?
Vogelbach, who previously has pinch hit and started a game as designated hitter, will hit sixth in the order for Seattle. Mike Marjama will catch Felix Hernandez and hit seventh and Ichiro Suzuki will play left field for the M’s.
Crafty veteran right-hander Johnny Cueto, who Hernandez has taken a cue from by adding a quick pitch to his repertoire, will be on the mound for the Giants.
The Mariners have two relief pitchers yet to make an appearance in their first four games – left-handers Wade LeBlanc and James Pazos. With four lefties and a switch hitter in San Francisco’s lineup against Hernandez, there is a good chance one or both could come out of the bullpen for the Mariners.
Also of note: with the game in a National League park, Hernandez gets a chance to hit the second-ever home run hit by a Mariners pitcher in a regular season game. The only one to date is his memorable grand slam against the Mets in 2008.
Coverage of the the Mariners-Giants series finale begins at 3 p.m. with the pregame show on 710 ESPN Seattle. Here are the lineups:
