The Mariners will be without slugger Nelson Cruz for at least the next week as he has been placed on the 10-day disabled list with an ankle sprain.

The move is retroactive to April 1, which will make Cruz available to return April 11, when the Mariners are set to play the final game of their road trip in Kansas City.
Utility man Taylor Motter has been recalled from Triple-A Tacoma to fill Cruz’s roster spot. Motter will give the Mariners some added flexibility while they’re playing at San Francisco without a designated hitter for two games.
Cruz suffered his ankle injury slipping on steps behind the Mariners’ dugout at Safeco Field not long after he hit his second home run of the season Saturday. The injury is not expected to keep him longer than the required 10 days for a DL stint.

Cruz joins catcher Mike Zunino and left fielder Ben Gamel as starters currently on the DL for Seattle.
