The Seahawks have just one quarterback on their roster following the release of Trevone Boykin, who was arrested Wednesday on charges of aggravated assault. Both Mark Sanchez and Geno Smith have seen their names thrown out as potential options for Seattle, but is either player a good fit for this team?

Seahawks GM Schneider: ‘Trust the process’ with team’s young talent

“The more experienced quarterback is Mark Sanchez,” 710 ESPN Seattle’s John Clayton said of Sanchez and Smith.

Sanchez, 31, has played in the NFL for seven seasons. In addition to having played for Seahawks coach Pete Carroll while at USC, Sanchez has also worked with current Seahawks offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer while both men were with the Jets.

“The fact that they’re going back to a running-offense that’s going to be Brian Schottenheimer’s, why not get him a quarterback that he’s familiar with,” Clayton said, “as opposed to Geno Smith, who he doesn’t know?”

Seattle can also turn to the NFL Draft this April for a quarterback; the team hasn’t drafted one since selecting Wilson in the third round in 2013, but was rumored to have been interested in Patrick Mahomes last year. But if they’re looking to test free agency for a replacement, they’ll need to make a move.

“I counted up about a week or so ago, there was 10 vacancies for backup quarterbacks,” Clayton said. “Now we’re down to maybe four or five, maybe even a little less than that. And you’ve got to scramble… because if the musical chairs stop and you don’t get the guy that you want, you may be left a little bit thin.”

Hear Clayton explain Seattle’s backup quarterback situation above, and break down the pros and cons of a couple candidates.
