LISTEN: Ed Dickson describes what type of tight end he'll be in Seattle

During the final Pete Carroll Show of the 2017 season on 710 ESPN Seattle, the Seahawks’ head coach re-iterated what he considers to be the recipe for a strong football team: defense, a focus on special teams, and running the football. And while the Seahawks haven’t made any blockbuster moves two weeks into free agency, they have added a few players that can help promote Carroll’s football philosophy – specifically in the run game.

Two of those players are guard D.J. Fluker and tight end Ed Dickson. Fluker joined 710 ESPN Seattle last week to talk about how he sees himself fitting into the Seahawks’ scheme. This morning, Dickson talked to Brock Huard and Mike Salk about his style of play.

“I’m a blocker first,” Dickson said. “I pride myself (on it). When I came out of college, they talked about how I was a pass-catcher… don’t get me wrong, I love to be a pass catcher, but I consider myself an all-around tight end. I’m not afraid to stick my nose in there and block for my running backs, and whoever, even Russell on the couple runs that he’s got. If I had to explain myself as a tight end, I’d much rather see my teammates shine, my running backs, my receivers shine, than my own self. I’ve never been a personal stat guy. Do I want a Pro Bowl? Sure. But I’d much rather have a Super Bowl over a Pro Bowl any day.”

D.J. Fluker ready to boost Seahawks’ run: ‘This is going to be fun’

Dickson, 30, is an eight-year veteran who spent his last four seasons with the Carolina Panthers. The free agent tight end signed a three-year deal with Seattle Mar. 16.

Dickson played at Oregon, and said returning to the Pacific Northwest was one benefit of signing with the Seahawks.

“It was just the fit,” Dickson said. “I’m friends with Kam Chancellor and stuff like that, and it’s just the fit. Going away from my home for the last four years in Carolina, it’s hard. But if I was going to uproot and move, I knew that Seattle was the best spot. I’m going back to the Pacific Northwest where my kids’ grandparents are up there, I went to college up there. And Seahawks fans are one in a million.

“I wouldn’t have said that last year,” Dickson said with a laugh. “I’ve always been a fan of them. It was just a fit; it fit like a glove.”

Dickson also talked about his history with Pete Carroll (Carroll recruited Dickson, a Southern California native) and why he feels like the Seahawks are still a Championship contender. Hear Dickson talk about his style of play in the clip above, and listen to his entire interview with Brock and Salk here (starting at the 16 minute mark).
