PEORIA, Ariz. – The Mariners have trimmed two more from the spring roster: Christian Bergman has been re-assigned to minor league camp and Gordon Beckham released.

With the moves the spring roster is now at 36.

Beckham has had a strong spring both with the bat and in the field, with Scott Servais earlier this week calling him perhaps the most consistent hitter from the start of spring. The utility spot he was battling Andrew Romine and Taylor Motter for – both of whom are currently on the 40-man roster – appears to be going to Romine, however. Beckham had an out in his contract and now can be signed by any club. If he does not find a better opportunity elsewhere, he could re-sign with the Mariners.

The release of Beckham led to our one and only lineup change today.

Lineup!

Guillermo Heredia 8
Mitch Haniger 9
Daniel Vogelbach 3
Mike Zunino 2
Mike Ford DH
Taylor Motter 5
Kirk Nieuwenhuis 7
Zach Vincej 4
Andrew Romine 6

Casey Lawrence

Scheduled to pitch: Marc Rzepczynski, Edwin Diaz, Shawn Armstrong, Dan Altavilla Wyatt Mills.

Notes:

– A number of those missing from the lineup that will travel to Glendale to take on the White Sox will be getting at-bats in minor league games in Peoria. Nelson Cruz, Robinson Cano and Ichiro are all expected to take their work on the backfields today. The hope is all three, along with Jean Segura, will play Saturday.

-Erasmo Ramirez threw his first bullpen (fastballs only) since injury and all went well. Best-case scenario is he returns April 17, which would be the second game the Mariners would use their No. 5 starter spot.

-Kyle Seager did indeed buy Chik-Fil-A for the entire camp for breakfast after his team lost to Team Zunino in the spring-long situational hitting drill competition.

In addition to enjoying his breakfast biscuit, Zunino said that the drill, which was new this year, should benefit the team.

“It adds a little extra competition in there,” he said. “When we compete against each other it can sort of up the ante, talk some trash, have some fun. It just ups the intensity.”
