A few news and notes items for you as the offseason has officially begun:
At 6 a.m. Kevin Millwood, Miguel Olivo, Oliver Perez and George Sherrill all became free agents. Per his contract, the Mariners have until Saturday to reach an agreement with Hisashi Iwakuma on a new deal or he becomes a free agent as well.
Today’s moves leave the 40-man roster at 35. The Mariners most likely will look to trim the roster even further before Nov. 20, when the reserve list is due ahead of the Rule 5 Draft. We will take a closer look at this later in the week.
In other news, Brendan Ryan and Dustin Ackley have been announced as finalists for the American League Rawlings Gold Glove Award. Ryan’s competition is Elvis Andrus and J.J. Hardy while Ackley goes up against Robinson Cano and Dustin Pedroia. The winners will be announced on ESPN Tuesday on a show that begins at 6:30.
One final note which was reported a couple of days ago but not announced by the team until today: Tim Kissner has been named Director of International Operations. Kissner, who resides in Kirkland, has worked in the Cubs, Phillies, and Indians organizations. He most recently held the position of West Coast crosschecker and before that was the Pacific Rim coordinator for the Phillies.
