Spring training is officially underway, and to get a jump on the season 710 ESPN Seattle’s Brock Huard and Tom Wassell chatted with Mariners sportscaster Aaron Goldsmith.

Here are a few highlights:

On what he’s excited about to kick off training: “One of my goals each day during spring training is to get into the clubhouse and try to talk to at least one new person a day. Because we’ve all talked to Felix (Hernandez), we’ve all talked to (James) Paxton and to (Nelson) Cruz and to (Robinson) Cano and to (Kyle) Seager, and we want to talk to all those guys for all the obvious reasons. But the players we know absolutely nothing about, those guys sometimes make for the best radio because of what they’ve had to do to get here. It’s probably been harder for them to get inside that major league clubhouse in Peoria than it was for some of the other guys that we mention … and I think that is just a fantastic way to connect our fans with these players.”

Breaking down the Mariners: Will the bullpen be the difference?

On new Mariners’ CF Dee Gordon: “He has a fantastic personality. He’s really a laid back guy off the field, but he has promised us that that’s because he exhausts himself on the field. We got a chance to know Dee a little bit at an event at Safeco Field back in January, and he’s a wonderful guy to talk with and he seems to know every hall of famer currently living. He’s currently got a great relationship with (Ken) Griffey Jr. He is somebody that I think Mariners fans will not only get to enjoy knowing through interviews … but also because of what he can do on the field. I think this is a move by (general manager) Jerry (Dipoto) to, one, address a position of need for the Mariners. They needed an outfielder. And if you get him as your leadoff guy, now you have (Jean) Segura as your No. 2 hitter, and then it just goes down onto Cano, onto Cruz, onto Seager. This is going to be about as deep of a lineup as you’ll find.”
