The Hot Stove will air tonight from 7 to 9 p.m. on 710 ESPN Seattle and Mariners.com. Scheduled guests include general manager Jerry Dipoto, pitching coach Mel Stottlemyre Jr., James Paxton and New York Times national baseball reporter Tyler Kepner.

Should Felix or Paxton be Mariners’ Opening Day starter?

Last week we had a terrific show, which was broadcast from an event at Safeco Field. With a number of players in town for various pre-spring training events, we had a great live guest list, resulting in some fun interviews and get-to-knows with two new Mariners. If you missed it, never fear, we have a podcast.

It would appear my job just got easier with the additions of Dee Gordon and Ryon Healy, as both were terrific interviews. Gordon told stories of working out with Hall of Famers, dinner dates at Subway with a young Robinson Cano, and how a trip to the Dominican Republic sparked him to do important work there.

Healy, who played at Oregon in college, seems genuinely thrilled to be in Seattle (even in the rain). It was interesting to hear him talk about the work he puts in at the plate, his evaluation of what he did in 2017 and his expectations going forward. Healy also gave a good rundown on the Nelson Cruz mini-camp in Miami and thoughts on what he observed across the field when playing against the Mariners the past two years as an Oakland Athletic.

Mike Zunino was next to join the show and he had stories as well, most notably the conversation he had with umpire Gary Cederstrom before and after Thyago Vieria’s high octane major league debut.

The second hour of the show featured conversations with Mitch Haniger and Scott Servais, who both stopped by the 710 set and recorded interviews from the Mariners Caravan. Finally, a terrific piece by Gary Hill on Edgar Martinez, complete with radio calls guaranteed to give you goosebumps, closed out the show.

The Hot Stove can be heard Wednesday nights from 7 to 9 p.m. on 710 ESPN Seattle.
