Video: What to watch for in Maurer’s second start

Rookie pitcher Brandon Maurer will try to do what Joe Saunders did a night earlier when the Mariners host the Astros tonight at Safeco Field: rebound from a disappointing first start.

Saunders, roughed up in his 2013 debut last week against Oakland, allowed six hits and struck out five over 6.1 shutout innings Monday.

Shannon Drayer noticed a trend in the Astros’ approach Monday, and as she explains in the video above, Maurer might be able to take advantage of Houston’s hitters if they take a similar approach tonight.

First pitch is at 7:10. The game can be heard on 710 ESPN Seattle, and you can also follow along with our live gametracker.

Here is the Mariners’ lineup:

Franklin Gutierrez, CF
Michael Saunders, RF
Kendrys Morales, DH
Michael Morse, LF
Justin Smoak, 1B
Jesus Montero, C
Dustin Ackley, 2B
Robert Andino, 3B
Brendan Ryan, SS

Brandon Maurer, SP

Former Mariner Erik Bedard will start for Houston.
