WSU quarterback Tyler Hilinski, 21, found dead of apparent suicide

Pullman, Wash. police have confirmed that Washington State quarterback Tyler Hilinski has died of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound. He was 21 years old.
According to the police report, officers responded to Hilinski’s residence on Jan. 16 for a welfare check after he did not show up for practice. Officers found Hilinski deceased with an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head. A rifle and note were recovered nearby.
An investigation to confirm the manner of death is ongoing.
Hilinski was a redshirt sophomore with the WSU Cougars football team. He appeared in eight games in the 2017 season, and was expected to assume a starting role in the fall of 2018.
“We are deeply saddened to hear the news of Tyler’s passing. He was an incredible young man, and everyone who had the privilege of knowing him was better for it,” head coach Mike Leach said in a statement. “The entire WSU community mourns as thoughts and prayers go out to his family.”
