The Seahawks have fired offensive line coach Tom Cable after seven seasons. The news was first reported by the Seattle Times’ Bob Condotta.

The team confirmed the move Wednesday afternoon.

O’Neil: Seahawks need a bad cop for quarterback Russell Wilson

The release of Cable is the latest of several coaching moves expected for Seattle after the team’s disappointing end to a 9-7 season, which was rife with inconsistencies in the run game and ultimately concluded in a failure to secure a playoff berth for the first time since 2011.

Cable, who is an alum of Snohomish High School, responded with a statement released by the Seahawks on Thursday morning.

As the coach primarily responsible for Seattle’s run game, Cable came under fire for struggles on the ground in 2016 and 2017. After sitting comfortable in the top five in the league in rushing yards from 2012-15 (peaking at No. 1 overall in 2014), Seattle dropped to No. 25 in 2016 and No. 23 in 2017 – though they would have fared worse this season if not for almost 600 rushing yards from quarterback Russell Wilson.

It was reported late Tuesday evening that the team had parted ways with seven-year offensive coordinator Darrell Bevell. Earlier Wednesday morning, NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reported that Seattle would allow defensive coordinator Kris Richard out of his contract to pursue other coaching opportunities. Richard has reportedly interviewed to be the head coach of the Colts.
