Mike Leach names Darcel McBath as assistant coach for Cougs

The Washington State Cougars football team has promoted Darcel McBath to assistant coach, head coach Mike Leach announced Tuesday.
McBath previously served as the Cougars’ defensive quality control assistant. A statement from Washington State did not clarify what the specifics of his position would be, but noted he would be working in the secondary.

McBath, 32, began his coaching career with Washington State in 2017. The Gainsville, Texas native played for Mike Leach at Texas Tech from 2004-08, and spent five seasons in the NFL after being selected in the second round of the 2009 NFL Draft.
The promotion of McBath isn’t the only coaching move for the Cougs; the team hired former Minnesota head coach Tracy Claeys as their defensive coordinator, following the departure of former coordinator Alex Grinch.
The No. 21 Cougars finished their 2017 season with a 9-4 record, and ultimately made a repeat appearance in the Holiday Bowl, where they fell to 42-17 No. 18 Michigan State.
