Mariners’ Jean Segura says he was robbed by police in Dominican

Dec 21, 2017, 2:19 PM | Updated: 6:23 pm

Mariners shortstop Jean Segura wrote that he was held at gunpoint, assaulted and robbed by DICAN, the Dominican Republic’s anti-drug police, in an Instagram post Thursday.

“The DICAN stops me with rifles, they hit me, they throw me to the ground, they take my belongings, they crash my vehicle,” the post translates to, in part. “Today it is me, tomorrow it will be another player.”

DICAN has been cited for numerous cases of extortion and drug trafficking in recent years.

The National Police of the Dominican Republic announced on its Twitter account Thursday afternoon that it has appointed a commission to investigate Segura’s case.

Segura, 27, is a native of San Juan, Dominican Republic. He was acquired by the Mariners prior to last season, hitting .300 with 11 home runs, 45 RBIs and 80 runs scored in 125 games as the team’s primary leadoff hitter. He signed a five-year, $70 million extension in June to keep him in Seattle through 2022.

Segura played on the Dominican Republic team in the 2017 World Baseball Classic along with Mariners teammates Robinson Cano and Nelson Cruz.
