The Washington Huskies will be retiring No. 2 in their men’s basketball program this February in honor of former star and current Cavaliers point guard Isaiah Thomas.

No. 12 Gonzaga holds off Washington 97-70

“Words can’t describe how grateful I am to receive this honor,” Thomas said in the official press release. “The University of Washington provided me the opportunity and support to pursue my dream of playing professional basketball, but it has also shaped who I am as a person. I always dreamed of becoming a Husky, playing in Hec Ed and earning my degree from Washington, and to know that my name will live there forever means the world to me.”

The 5-feet-9 Tacoma native played at Washington from 2008-2011 and earned numerous honors, including Pac-10 Freshman of the Year and a two-time nod at first team All-Pac-10. He was a core member of the program’s 2010-2011 squad, which went on to become Pac-10 Tournament champions thanks to a now-famous game-winning buzzer beater in overtime from Thomas – one of his finest moments as a Dawg.

Thomas finished his career at Washington eighth all-time in scoring (1,721 points) and was drafted by the Sacramento Kings in 2011. Thomas went on to play for the Suns, Celtics and Cavaliers, and has since been named a two-time NBA All-Star (both times with Boston).

Thomas’ No. 2 jersey will be retired during the Huskies’ game against Utah at Alaska Airlines Arena on February 15.
