Friday update: Peterson was diagnosed with an open fracture of the left mandible and is scheduled to undergo surgery later today at the University of Iowa Medical Center in Iowa City.

According to numerous reports, DJ Peterson, the Mariners’ No. 1 pick from the 2013 draft, was hospitalized after being hit in the jaw by an 0-1 fastball thrown by Brewers prospect Jorge Lopez in a game Thursday night.

The good news is Peterson stayed on his feet and did not lose consciousness but it would appear the rest of his season with Single-A Clinton, which ends in 11 days, could be in jeopardy.

Peterson, who was promoted from Everett after just 29 games, was coming off consecutive player-of-the-week honors. He has hit 13 home runs and put up a line of .304/.364/.556/.920 in his first two months of pro ball.

I will update this post as we get more information regarding the injury.
