The Seahawks were penalized six times on Sunday, which is about average for one NFL team during a game.
That fact that it matches Seattle’s season-low for penalties in a game gives you an idea of just how big an issue those have been.

Not only that, but five of Seattle’s six penalties were 5-yard misdemeanors that occurred before the snap. The only 10-yard penalty called on the Seahawks was invented out of whole cloth as officials flagged J.D. McKissic for an offensive pass-interference violation that did not actually occur while missing the facemask violation against Tyler Lockett that was evident from the top row of the stadium.
All told, the Seahawks were penalized 35 yards in the game, which was less than half the penalty yardage assessed to San Francisco in the game not to mention a season-low for the Seahawks.
“That’s way better than we’ve been,” coach Pete Carroll said. “I was probably over the top more than I should be because it’s still six penalties, but for us that’s way better and the big, significant penalties didn’t show up. It was all line-of-scrimmage stuff, which really, we can do a lot better with.”
Seattle leads the league with 109 penalties this season, but has now slowed off its record pace. The Seahawks currently project to commit 158.5 penalties, which would only be second-most in NFL history. The Raiders set the record last season when they were flagged 163 times for 1,358 yards.
