Notebook: Zduriencik to return; bad news for Hultzen

Two major pieces of news today from Safeco Field today:

The first puts to rest any speculation that the Mariners will make a change at general manager. Although it was learned recently that Jack Zduriencik’s contract had been extended through the 2014 season, there was thought that a change could be made. Senior vice president of communications Randy Adamack confirmed today that Zduriencik will be the general manager in 2014.

No such confirmation has come regarding the status of manager Eric Wedge, whose contract expires at the end of this season. Wedge’s coaches, however, are under contract through next year. A source tells me that Wedge insisted that the coaches be given more than one-year deals.

The second piece of news involves an injury. Top prospect Danny Hultzen, who has been throwing in the instructional league, suffered discomfort in his left shoulder and was checked out by team doctor Edward Khalfayan. He will travel to Pensacola, Fla. to be seen by noted shoulder specialist Dr. James Andrews.

“Ed saw him, and quite frankly he doesn’t like what he sees, so we have been in touch with Dr. Andrews,” Zduriencik said. “He saw some damage that he was unhappy with. It’s the tendon area, labrum area, and he just wants to do the right thing, get a second opinion.”

Hultzen will be seen by Dr. Andrews Monday.
