The Mariners announced Tuesday afternoon that top pitching prospect Danny Hultzen underwent shoulder surgery in Pensacola, Fla. Noted shoulder specialist Dr. James Andrews performed the surgery to clean up the labrum, fix a partial tear in the rotator cuff and repair the capsule.
There is no timetable set for Hultzen’s return.
“This is very unfortunate for Danny and his family, but we have nothing but high hopes for a good recovery and rehab,” general manager Jack Zduriencik said in the team’s press release. “Danny is a tireless worker and will do everything he can to get back on the mound to start competing again.”
While this is certainly not good news, the news could have been worse. The cleanup of the labrum is not as significant a surgery as a repair of a tear. Regardless, it is highly unlikely Hultzen will return next year.
Hultzen, who had been throwing in Arizona while getting ready for fall league when he was shut down, threw 35 2/3 innings this year.
