Jerry Dipoto has started to dust off the stove.

“We’ve got some cleanup to do,” the Mariners general manager said of the team’s roster earlier this month. “There were a lot of guys on the 60-day (disabled list). Right now we have a disproportionate number of pitchers on our 40-man because we were trying to create depth on the fly and we have some unwinding to do.”

Two moves were made Thursday with the club outrighting reliever Ryan Garton to Triple-A Tacoma and losing outfielder Jacob Hannemann, who was claimed off waivers by the Chicago Cubs.

Hannemann, who the Mariners claimed off waivers from the Cubs on Sept. 4, made his MLB debut Sept. 9 and appeared in 11 games, going 3 for 20 with a solo home run.

Garton, who was acquired from the Tampa Bay Rays along with catcher Mike Marjama on Aug. 6, was called up Sept. 1 and posted a 1.54 ERA with a walk and seven strikeouts in 13 appearances with the Major League club. He is expected to compete for a spot in the bullpen next spring.

With Thursday’s moves, the 40-man roster is now at 38.

Notes

• Gold Glove Award finalists were announced Thursday morning; no Mariners made the cut this year.

• Single game tickets will be available much earlier this year with the team announcing they will go on sale at 10 a.m. Nov. 18. Presale for Mariners Mail subscribers, Mariners social media followers and Ticketmaster subscribers begins at 9 a.m. Nov. 17. For more details log on to mariners.com. One note: I was asked about this by a number of folks on Twitter (follow @shannondrayer), but promotional dates have yet to be announced. In past years the promotions schedule has been released in late January, usually the week of FanFest.

• Two great links to pass on. First, Mike Marjama’s hometown paper gives the story of his interesting offseason. Second, Infield Chatter, which is the official app for the MLB Players Association, did a nice video piece on Edwin Diaz.
