The Seahawks provided plenty of reason to be worried about their prospects for the rest of the season in the first half, but after then it was smooth sailing against an overmatched Indianapolis Colts team.
Seahawks RB Chris Carson leaves with leg injury
Here’s a quarter-by-quarter breakdown of Seattle’s 46-18 victory Sunday night at CenturyLink Field.
FIRST QUARTER
Seahawks 3, Colts 2
Doug Baldwin showed he isn’t too hampered by the groin injury that kept him out of the fourth quarter of last week’s game in Tennessee and a pair of practices this week, hauling in a 27-yard reception that helped set up a Blair Walsh field goal on Seattle’s first offensive drive. The Seahawks’ second drive didn’t go nearly as well, as they were pinned at their own 1 by a Colts punt, and quarterback Russell Wilson went down in the end zone for a safety on a sack by Nate Hairston that was confirmed by an officials replay. Seattle was driving near midfield at the end of the quarter.
Notable: Seattle cornerback Jeremy Lane suffered a hip injury on the Seahawks’ first defensive series and was ruled out for the rest of the game. Also on that opening series, Indianapolis lost rookie center Devshawn Bond to a knee injury. The Colts are already without starting center Ryan Kelly, who is recovering from foot surgery. Later in the frame, Seahawks defensive end Cliff Avril was ruled questionable to return with a neck injury.
SEA – Blair Walsh FG 44, 9:03 (3-0 SEA)
IND – Safety, Russell Wilson sacked for -6 by Nate Hairston, 4:18 (3-2 SEA)
SECOND QUARTER
Colts 15, Seahawks 10
It might be time to panic. The Seahawks’ slow start to the 2017 season has continued, as they entered halftime trailing the woeful Indianapolis Colts after Donte Moncrief scored on an 18-yard pass play in the final minute of the half. Seattle rushed back down the field to set up a 37-yard field goal, but Blair Walsh missed as the clock expired. Earlier in the quarter, the Seahawks showed that sometimes their defense can be their best offense, as cornerback Justin Coleman picked off Indianapolis quarterback Jacoby Brisset and returned it 28 yards for a touchdown. That gave Seattle’s defense a 7-3 advantage in the scoring department on its offense through the first half. That score was the last bit of good fortune for the Seahawks for the half, as they allowed the Colts – who are significantly far from full-stength – to pull off a 12-play, 80-yard touchdown drive ending in a 1-yard score by former Seahawks running back Robert Turbin. It went from bad to worse on Seattle’s next drive, with Russell Wilson’s first target of the day for Jimmy Graham ending in an interception by the Colts’ Matthias Farley.
Notable: Cliff Avril, who left the game in the first quarter with a neck injury, was announced as ruled out for a return to the contest during the second quarter.
SEA – Justin Coleman 28 interception return, 12:25 (Blair Walsh kick, 10-2 SEA)
IND – Robert Turbin 1 run, 5:25 (pass fail, 10-8 SEA)
IND – Jacoby Brisset 18 pass to Donte Moncrief, :25 (Adam Vinatieri kick, 15-10 IND)
THIRD QUARTER
Seahawks 32, Colts 18
After a pretty disappointing first half, the Seahawks’ offense went to work in the third quarter. First it put together a nine-play, 84-yard drive, and Russell Wilson capped it off with a 23-yard run to the end zone to get the Seahawks back in the lead. A formation penalty by the Colts on the PAT gave the Hawks a chance to go for two points from the 1, and Wilson completed a pass to Doug Baldwin to push Seattle’s advantage to three points. Later in the frame, J.D. McKissick announced his presence with a lightning-quick 30-yard rushing TD at the end of a six-play, 75-yard drive. The defense got back into the action shortly after, as Bobby Wagner corralled a fumble and returned it 21 yards for a score, putting Seattle in a commanding 31-18 lead. That gave the Seahawks 14 points in the span of 11 seconds of game clock. It wasn’t all good for Seattle in the third, however, as a pass to Jimmy Graham hit off his hands and was intercepted by Indianapolis’ Malik Hooker, leading to a Colts field goal.
SEA – Russell Wilson 23 run, 9:23 (Wilson pass to Doug Baldwin, SEA 18-15)
IND – Adam Vinatieri FG 40, 4:57 (Tie 18-18)
SEA – J.D. McKissic 30 run, 2:12 (Blair Walsh kick, SEA 25-18)
SEA – Bobby Wagner 21 fumble return, 2:09 (Walsh kick, SEA 32-18)
FOURTH QUARTER
The Seahawks’ continued to roll when in possession early in the quarter, working their way through a nine-play, 74-yard drive before Russell Wilson connected with Like Willson for a 6-yard score, putting Seattle ahead by three scores. J.D. McKissic later added his second score of the night, a 27-yard reception, but in between the quarter’s two touchdown the Seahawks looked to lose Chris Carson for a prolonged period of time as he was carted off with his leg in an air cast.
SEA – Russell Wilson 6 pass to Luke Willson, 11:16 (Blair Walsh kick, SEA 39-18)
SEA – Wilson 27 pass to JD McKissic, 2:22 (Walsh kick, SEA 46-18)
