Another night, another lineup. You know what? It’s been working. Dating back to May 31 when Lloyd McClendon put out that first of a string of very different lineups that sparked much ire on Twitter all those lineups have done is go 8-1. The bench has come up huge for the team. Just what have we seen?
Yesterday: 3-0 win over the Rays
A John Buck single, Willie Bloomquist single and Robinson Cano double lead to the first two runs. Stefen Romero drives in the 3rd with a putout to the right side of the field.
Sunday: 5-0 win over the Rays.
The game was scoreless until the top of the 9th when Brad Miller with 2 outs and 2 strikes hit a triple, Willie Bloomquist walked and Endy Chavez stuck his bat out with 2 strikes and looped a single to left that scored the winning run.
Saturday: 7-4 win over the Rays.
Cole Gillespie gets them on the board after being shutout the day before in the 2nd with a home run. Bloomquist and Endy Chavez drive in the next 2 runs to put them up 3-2. Dustin Ackley with a 3 run double to drive in the eventual game winner and Willie Bloomquist follows with another RBI.
Friday: 4-0 loss to the Rays.
Wednesday: 2-0 win over the Braves.
Gillespie gets them all they need with a RBI single to left in the 4th, Kyle Seager adds one in the 7th.
Tuesday: 7-5 win over the Braves
Ramirez gets lit early, Brad Miller and James Jones get 2 back in 2nd with RBI singles. Stefen Romero ties it with a 3 run home run, John Buck plates the winning runs with a 2 run shot.
Monday: Ten run romp in the Bronx over the Yankees, Michael Saunders and Kyle Seager each with 3 RBI’s.
Sunday 4-0 win over Det and Scherzer
Leadoff Chavez double and Saunders double gets on board in 1st, Bloomquist double scores 2nd run, James Jones with an RBI single in the 3rd, Brad Miller throws in a solo shot as well.
Saturday win over Smyly 3-2
Buck and Romero get on in the 2nd, Gillespie and Bloomquist bring them home. Bloomquist with the game winner in the 4th.
And that win was courtesy of the first lineup that caused the outrage.
Bloomquist
Chavez
Zunino
Smoak
Seager
Romero
Buck
Gillespie
Franklin
Since May 31st…
Bloomquist .435/1.002 5 RBI
Gillespie .409/1.026 3RBI
Buck .333/.867 2RBI
Romero .357/1.071 4RBI
Chavez .269
Also worth noting, not from the bench but any offense from shortstop is good offense
Miller .240/.761. 6 runs scored and 4 RBI.
All of these are obviously small sample sizes but I wanted to get this all in one place to illustrate just what the bench in particular has done. Sure the lineups may look strange but they have been effective. Or effective enough.
