Mariners notebook: Jarrod Dyson done for the year, and where’s Jerry?

ARLINGTON, Texas – Jarrod Dyson’s first season as a Mariner, and most likely last, has come to an end. Manager Scott Servais told members of the media Monday afternoon that Dyson did not travel with the team to Texas, and would not be returning to the field in 2017.
“Jarrod has decided to go ahead and have surgery,” he said. “It’s a very minor procedure, but something he feels he needs to get done.”

Head athletic trainer Rick Griffin described Dyson’s injury, which he first suffered Aug. 19, as a core muscle injury/sports hernia. Dyson hit the DL and was reinstated Sept. 1, but he came out of the game the next day after experiencing discomfort in the area once again. The thought at the time was that he would return after giving the injury time to quiet, but Servais acknowledged then that Dyson would not be 100 percent, comparing the situation to what Robinson Cano endured in 2015.
With three young, club-controllable outfielders on Settle’s roster, Dyson has most likely played his last game as a Mariner as he will become a free agent at the end of the season. Guillermo Heredia will continue to get the majority of the starts in center field for the remainder of 2017.

• Felix Hernandez and James Paxton threw bullpens Monday in Texas in preparation for their upcoming starts Thursday and Friday. Hernandez will be limited to around 50 pitches in his outing while Paxton will most likely be allowed to throw a few more as he has not missed as much time.
• Jerry Dipoto was not at the sim game that Felix and Paxton threw Friday at Safeco Field. Where was the Mariners general manager? At the Tokyo Dome watching the Yomiuri Giants and Yakult Swallows. Dipoto and vice president of scouting Tom Allison are expected to be in Sapporo on Tuesday to see highly coveted pitcher Shohei Otani’s start.
• Ryan Weber has been activated from the 60-day DL and outrighted to Tacoma. Zac Curtis was claimed off waivers by the Phillies.
