LISTEN: Pete Carroll reacts to Seahawks' season-opening loss to Packers

Pete Carroll joined Brock and Salk on Monday morning to review the Seahawks’ 17-9 loss to the Green Bay Packers. You can listen to the full interview embedded above or at this link. Here’s a quick breakdown of what he covered.

The run game. Carroll didn’t have much of a review of the Seahawks’ running backs, mainly because they didn’t use the ground game as much as maybe he would have liked. “We didn’t get to see enough. We didn’t run enough. We ran 18 times, it’s not enough so we need more.”

Rawls update. Carroll provided insight into why Thomas Rawls was inactive with a high ankle sprain despite practicing all of last week. “Thomas looked really good last week, he just really didn’t have all his confidence that he could make sure that he was over it and done with. I think he’s gonna come out Wednesday’s practice and be raring to go and we won’t look back. That was the idea. We want to get it behind him and make sure it’s done, but the high ankles do linger. I hope that he’ll feel good on it. We just want it behind us instead of having it be kind of gone.”

Cornerbacks step up. With Jeremy Lane being ejected very early on, responsibility fell on rookie Shaquill Griffin and the newly acquired Justin Coleman at the cornerback position. Carroll was pleased with both of their performances. Regarding Griffin, Carroll said he was happy “particularly the way he responded. He played a terrific football game. He was just sticking on everything that he had a chance. He had the one little quick slant, the run/pass thing that they got in there that he just overran it. Other than that he was really good and really confident.” On Coleman, who was brought over from New England the previous weekend in a trade: “He did a very nice job. We had seen something, we thought he looked very special on the film. We were thrilled to get him and in a week’s time he just jumped out there.”

Strong return for Lockett. In his first action back from a broken leg that ended his 2016 season, Tyler Lockett had a big kick return to open the game and had a nice performance in limited action. “Just thrilled he’s back out there going,” Carroll said. “We had to hold him out a little bit because it was his first time back so he didn’t get as many snaps from scrimmage but what a wonderful player he is. Golly, he lit it up.”

Quotable. On Russell Wilson: “I thought Russell played a really good game under the circumstances.”
