Taijuan Walker will make his long-awaited 2014 Mariners debut Monday, as he has been named the starter against the Astros in Houston.
Walker was called up from Triple-A Tacoma on Sunday, and outfielder Stefen Romero was been sent down to make room on the M’s 25-man roster.
It’s been a rough start to 2014 for Walker, who was shut down in spring training due to shoulder issues and dealt with a few setbacks while rehabbing. He put together a 4.35 ERA in seven minor-league starts, and while that’s not a very impressive number, his last start was a dominant complete-game shutout for Tacoma against Oklahoma City.
Walker made three starts for the Mariners in September 2013, going 1-0 with a 3.60 ERA, 1.00 WHIP and 12 strikeouts in 15 innings.
In 50 games with Seattle this season, Romero has hit .200 with three homers and 11 RBIs.
The Mariners had been without an announced starter for Monday since Erasmo Ramirez was demoted earlier in the week.
