CLEVELAND – With less than two hours to go until the trade deadline, the Mariners have traded outfielder Abraham Almonte and pitcher Stephen Kohlscheen to the Padres for outfielder Chris Denorfia.
Denorfia, who was originally drafted by the Reds in 2002, has spent the past five seasons with the Padres. He is currently hitting .242/.293/.319/.612 but has versatility in the outfield and a good career split against lefties at .301/.367/.443/.809.
Denorfia will be a free agent at the end of the season and, assuming no money is going in either direction, will be owed in the neighborhood of $700,000 for the remainder of the year. No 40-man move will be necessary as Almonte will come off of it, but a big-league move will need to be made when Denorfia joins the team Friday in Baltimore.
