OAKLAND – Austin Davis was good enough to win Thursday’s preseason finale, allowing Seattle to finish the preseason undefeated for the third time under coach Pete Carroll.
Now we’ll wait to see if it’s enough to win him a job on the Seahawks roster.
“This was really a great showing for him, a great opportunity,” coach Pete Carroll said. “Really, we always talk about the opportunities, and he had a terrific opportunity and he was able to come through.”
Davis completed all five passes he attempted in the final 4 minutes of the game, and his 16-yard touchdown pass to Kenny Lawler with 1:15 left was the decisive play in Seattle’s 17-13 victory over the Oakland Raiders.

Davis’ touchdown pass capped a 75-yard drive in which he passed for 62 yards and overcame a second-down sack after the Seahawks had crossed midfield. It was a compelling closing argument for Davis, who is trying to make the team as Seattle’s back-up quarterback. Trevone Boykin – who held the job last year – was 13-for-21 passing in the first half for 166 yards and a touchdown but was picked off twice. Davis played all of the second half, completing 10 of 16 passes for 123 yards and a touchdown.
Davis entered the NFL as an undrafted rookie in 2012, the same year that Seattle starter Russell Wilson was drafted. He was with the Rams (twice), Browns, Broncos and Dolphins before signing with Seattle this offseason.
Seattle will trim its roster to 53 players on Saturday.
Wilson was one of the first players to run onto the field to celebrate, though like most of Seattle’s starters he did not play.
The Seahawks finished 4-0 in the preseason for the third time in Carroll’s eight seasons. They also were unbeaten in exhibition games in 2012 and 2013.
Defensive tackle Jarran Reed was the only member of the first-team defense who played in the game. The only starters to play for Seattle’s offense were on the line: left tackle Rees Odhiambo, center Justin Britt, right guard Mark Glowinski and right tackle Germain Ifedi. Oday Aboushi started at left guard in place of Luke Joeckel, who was at the game but did not play after undergoing treatment on his knee earlier this week.
The Seahawks did suffer one notable injury as DeAndre Elliott was fitted with an inflatable leg brace and taken off the field on a motorized cart after he was hurt on a second-quarter play.
