Mariners’ Leonys Martin clears waivers, outrighted to Triple-A

Leonys Martin is still a member of the Seattle Mariners organization.
Martin, who was designated for assignment on Wednesday to make room for relief pitcher David Phelps’ return from the disabled list, cleared waivers and has been outrighted to Triple-A Tacoma. It is the second time this season the 29-year-old outfielder has been DFA’d, cleared waivers and sent to the Rainiers.

A slow start to the 2017 season resulted in Martin’s initial demotion to Tacoma, where he spent much of the year. He returned to Seattle’s active roster on July 30, and in 19 games back with the Mariners he hit .230 with a .692 on-base plus slugging percentage, three home runs, a double, a triple, eight RBIs and a pair of stolen bases.
Martin could very well return to the Mariners in short order. Not only does Seattle have a few outfielders nursing injuries, but MLB active rosters expand from 25 to 40 players on Sept. 1, making him a prime candidate to rejoin the team as extra help on the bench and a late-inning defensive replacement.
