Mariners waiting to find out more about injuries to Robinson Cano, Guillermo Heredia

ATLANTA – The Mariners will have to wait for further X-rays and MRIs on Robinson Cano and Guillermo Heredia to get a more definitive idea of how long either player could miss, but the initial reports from trainers after they each left the Mariners’ 9-6 Wednesday win over the Braves early was better than what manager Scott Servais thought it might be.
Cano left the game in the third inning after hitting his 507th career double, passing Babe Ruth on the all-time doubles list. Trainers came out to the field to check on him, and with little discussion he left the game with what was later announced to be hamstring tightness. After the game Cano said that he felt the tightness running out of the box and that he would have an MRI in New York during Thursday’s day off.
“With Cano, it’s probably going to be day to day. He’s got pretty good strength in it, they tested it after he came out,” said Servais.
Taylor Motter replaced Cano at second base and went 2 for 3 with two runs batted in.
Heredia is also scheduled for further evaluation in New York after getting hit by a pitch on the wrist in the seventh inning. He remained in the game after replay review showed he had indeed been hit, taking his place at first base. He did not return for the bottom half of the inning.
“He’s got hit on that forearm a couple of times in the past week or so, he’s real tender there,” said Servais. “We won’t know anything until we get to New York. Hopefully they will be OK. The initial signs are they are going to be fine, but will they be available Friday? We just don’t know.”
The Mariners, who had been going with a four-man bench and seven-man bullpen in recent weeks, activated David Phelps from the disabled list and DFA’d Leonys Martin to free up a 25-man roster spot earlier in the day. With three on the bench it is hard to carry one day-to-day player, let alone two, so there is a good chance we will see at least one roster move before the Mariners play the Yankees on Friday night.
