CARSON, Calif. – Backup quarterback Trevone Boykin has been a question mark for much of the first two weeks of training camp.

He was more like an exclamation point on Sunday night in the Seahawks’ preseason opener.

Boykin completed 12 of the 15 passes he attempted for 189 yards, he had a scoring pass to Kenny Lawler in the first half on a fourth-down play. He also rushed four times for 31 yards, including a nifty 4-yard touchdown run in the second quarter.

It was a pretty complete performance for the second-year quarterback.

“He had a big night,” coach Pete Carroll said. “He did beautifully. Threw the ball really well and moved well, made some big plays with his feet. Just was really in good command of what was going on.”

That’s great news. Boykin made the team as an undrafted rookie from TCU last season. Whether he gets to serve as Russell Wilson’s backup again will depend on whether he shows improvement from his performance a year ago.

In the first two weeks of training camp, Boykin did not seem to be distinctly better. In Sunday’s preseason, opener, however, he absolutely did as he finished with the second-most rushing yards of any Seahawk, and more importantly was both accurate and effective throwing the ball.

If you think the Seahawks must sign Duane Brown to an extension, when's the last time they opted against re-signing someone and it came back to bite them?
