Mariners place Felix Hernandez on DL for the second time this season

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The Mariners scratched Felix Hernandez from his scheduled start Saturday night and placed him on the 10-day disabled list with right shoulder biceps tendinitis.
Marco Gonzales was called up from Triple-A to take his place on the roster and make the start Saturday, though the game itself was postponed due to rain. The Mariners and Royals will instead play a doubleheader beginning at 11:15 a.m. Sunday, with Gonzales starting the first game.

This is the second trip to the DL for Hernandez this year as he was out from April 26 to June 22 with right shoulder biceps inflammation. The move is retroactive to Aug. 2.
Manager Scott Servais said Hernandez’s arm has been bothering him since his last start, when he allowed four runs on six and three walks in 5 1/3 innings against the Rangers last Monday, throwing 104 pitches.
“Shoulder’s not feeling good at all,” Servais said. “Felt it a little bit coming out of the last start over in Texas. Didn’t feel great obviously the last couple days and just thought talking it over yesterday it was probably best to shut him down for a little bit and try to get him back feeling good again. Don’t know how long he’ll be out but that’s the situation we’re at right now.”
Servais said he did not know if Hernandez’s current injury is related to his previous shoulder problem, adding that Hernandez wasn’t experiencing issues until the start in Texas.
Hernandez was headed back to Seattle on Saturday to be looked at by team doctors. Servais said the Mariners expect a more detailed diagnosis on Monday.
Gonzales, 25, was acquired from the Cardinals shortly before the trade deadline in exchange for Tyler O’Neill. The former first-round pick has made two starts for the Rainiers since the trade, the last on July 29 in which he gave up three runs in six innings pitched. He was originally scheduled to start for Tacoma on Saturday, so he will be on regular rest for the game against the Royals. It will mark his first appearance in the big leagues since September 2015.
