July was a good month for a pair of Mariners pitchers, and they have the hardware to prove it.
Just days after winning the American League’s Player of the Week award, Mariners left-hander James Paxton has been named the AL’s Pitcher of the Month. Meanwhile, teammate Edwin Diaz has been named the AL’s Reliever of the Month.
Paxton, 28, went 6-0 with a 1.37 ERA, 36 strikeouts and just six walks in six starts in July. The six wins were a team record for any month. In the AL, he led the month in wins, was second in ERA, tied for second in innings pitched (39 1/3) and tied for third in strikeouts.
Diaz, 23, had eight saves with a 1.98 ERA and 21 strikeouts over 13 relief appearances in July. Opponents hit just .163 (8 for 49) and maintained an average of 13.8 strikeouts per nine innings. For the season, he ranks seventh in the American League among relievers in saves (21) and strikeouts (64).
