What kind of a difference can a year make?

Well, in George Fant’s case, more than 20 pounds. Coach Pete Carroll explained why his left tackle in his second season might be the most improved player on the roster.

“Nobody has done more than George Fant,” coach Pete Carroll said. “George had just a fantastic spring and offseason. I think he was 319 he weighed in at. Fantastically fit and strong.”

Fant is one of the most ambitious offensive-line projects the Seahawks have taken on, which is really saying something when you consider this is a team that regularly tries to take college defensive linemen and see if they can block for the quarterback instead of trying to maim said quarterback.

Fant played college basketball at Western Kentucky, turning out for football only in 2015, which was his final year on campus. Primarily a tight end, he played fewer than a dozen snaps during the season, but was signed as an undrafted rookie last year.

Fant wound up starting 10 games, and the hope is that after a full offseason of strength and conditioning that he’s able to hold onto the left tackle job.

“You can imagine, it’s the first time he had a football offseason weight program,” Carroll said. “So just through the hard work he got bigger and stronger.”
