The Mariners have already made a pair of big trades in the last week, but could there be another one in the works?

Seattle has been linked to Oakland right-hander Sonny Gray, one of the top available names on the trade market ahead of next Monday’s MLB trade deadline, and the one-time All-Star would be a significant boost for a rotation that appears to be the weak link of the Mariners’ roster as they pursue a wild-card spot.

Longtime baseball reporter Jayson Stark said on “Brock and Salk” Tuesday that there is substance to the Mariners being involved in talks about Gray, but Seattle’s Jerry Dipoto may not be the best-equipped general manager to pull off a deal with the Athletics.

“Every indication that I get is that the Mariners are one of these teams that are in on him, but it would be a big hit on their (minor-league) system to make this deal,” Stark said, “and there’s just enough injury history and uncertainty around Sonny Gray that I am going to say that Jerry won’t pay that price and he won’t be a Mariner.”

Stark covered many more topics on “Brock and Salk,” including James Paxton nearing some Mariners history, and he shared some interesting details about Seattle’s trade last week of prospect Tyler O’Neill to St. Louis for pitcher Marco Gonzales.
