When the Mariners start the second half of the season on Friday night, they’ll turn to the closest thing they had to an ace in the first half.

James Paxton takes the hill for the M’s as they open a three-game weekend set in Chicago at 5:10 against the White Sox on 710 ESPN Seattle.

Stecker: Three things Mariners need to go right to make a run

The 28-year-old lefty got off to an impressive start in 2017, throwing four scoreless outings in his first five appearances, but a forearm issue kept him out of action for most of May and he struggled in June, posting a 7.20 ERA for the month. He has appeared to have gotten back on track over his last three starts, however, holding opponents to just six runs on eight hits over 20 1/3 innings, and he brings a 3.21 ERA and 1.18 WHIP into Friday.

Veteran right-hander James Shields will get the start for the White Sox.

Coverage begins on 710 ESPN Seattle with the pregame show at 4. Here are the full lineups.
