‘Brock and Salk’: Likability of Mariners’ Cano, Cruz on display in All-Star Game

Jul 12, 2017, 11:55 AM | Updated: 11:56 am

Seattle Mariners have had their fair share of memorable moments during the All-Star break. There’s Randy Johnson striking out John Kruk after throwing a wild pitch several feet over Kruk’s head in the 1993 All-Star Game, Ken Griffey Jr. hitting the warehouse just outside of Baltimore’s Camden Yards during that same year’s Home Run Derby, and Ichiro Suzuki winning the 2007 MVP award after going 3 for 3 with an inside-the-park home run – and that’s only scratching the surface.

On Tuesday night, the Mariners added to their storied All-Star history.

“Bob, Groz and Tom”: Cruz worth more to M’s than his trade value

Robinson Cano became the third Mariners player to win All-Star Game MVP honors after delivering an extra-inning homer that broke a 1-1 tie to help the American League get the victory, and Nelson Cruz provided what may end up being the night’s the most memorable moment by bringing his phone to the plate and asking National League catcher Yadier Molina to take a picture of him with umpire Joe West.

For “Brock and Salk,” the game was a reminder of just how likeable the Mariners’ stars are.

“The Mariners have star power,” Mike Salk said, adding that Seattle could have had an even bigger presence in Tuesday’s game in Miami. “Jean Segura could have been in the All-Star Game, quite clearly. Ben Gamel’s fifth in the league in hitting. Mitch Haniger, if he hadn’t gotten hurt and been able to continue what he was doing.”

In the video above, Salk and co-host Brock Huard discuss how Cano and Cruz stole the show, plus how evident it was that the two are highly respected by their peers.
