Mike Hampton resigns as Mariners bullpen coach

Jul 9, 2017, 7:14 PM | Updated: 8:35 pm

Shortly after the Mariners wrapped up the first half of the season with a 4-0 win over the Oakland A’s on Sunday afternoon, the team made a surprise announcement: Bullpen coach Mike Hampton had tendered his resignation.

Hampton, 44,  becomes the first member of Scott Servais’ original coaching staff put together before the 2016 season to leave the organization. According to a team source, it was Hampton’s desire to spend more time with his family.

Originally drafted by the Mariners in 1990, Hampton spent one year as pitching coach for the Tim Bogar-managed Arkansas Travelers, then an affiliate of the Los Angeles Angels. His job with the Mariners was his first as a coach in the big leagues.

According to a press release from the Mariners, a new bullpen coach will be named before the season resumes Friday in Chicago.
